Baby greens are immature versions of what we usually know as leafy vegetables. These tender greens, such as baby spinach or baby kale, are perfect for topping sandwiches and salads, adding to your favorite soup recipes and more!
Baby greens are tender enough to be eaten raw or cooked.
Growing baby greens is simple and easy! The key is water and sun or grow lights. Baby greens have shallow root systems, so they are well adapted to growing in containers. Make sure you have a planter with drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.
To start baby greens seeds, simply place the seed in soil. Cover the seeds with about 1/4 inch of soil and lightly tamp down. Keep the soil moist until germination begins – which is typically 3-7 days.
To grow baby greens indoors, a sunny windowsill will do! No sunlight in your home? Try growing baby green seeds under LED lights or grow lights. Remember to adjust these lights so they are just above, but not touching your plants.
Once the baby green seeds have germinated, expose your plants to either sunlight or grow lights for at least 4-6 hours a day. You can also water regularly as well as use an organic liquid fertilizer after about 3 weeks into growing your greens to promote additional growth and yield.
Once your baby greens have reached a height of about 4-6 inches, it's time to harvest! Simply use a pair of scissors and cut the leaves off close to the base. This will encourage new growth.
In your garden, the baby greens will be ready to harvest in about 45-50 days following planting. This is a shorter time frame than full-sized mature leafy vegetables. So, if you're looking for a fast and easy addition to your diet year round, start growing some baby green seeds in your home today!
